Capes are
having a moment again. My fairytale story with capes started here…
Desperate to
find an alternative to the traditional bridal veil, I was
watching Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine perform at the
‘Chime For Change: The Sound of Change Live‘ Concert and she came on stage,
barefoot (not relevant to this story), wearing a custom Gucci teal
gown and cape. This cape was life changing.
The veil is
one of the finishing touches of the bridal look and I just couldn't get on
board with the traditional headdress. I was
fortunate enough to find the most amazing dress designer, Kathryn Conover, who started off selling to Bergdorf Goodman, Sak’s, and Bloomingdales.
She has since moved on to bridal and custom dresses and is known
for highlighting feminine sensibility. I
worked with her around the clock on my custom wedding dress, which was inspired
by a fabulous, slightly off the radar, Dior gown I found on Pinterest (what would
we do without Pinterest!?) and married it with the epic sophisticated,
sexy, sheer lace look that is featured in all of Elie Saab’s dresses.
Since my cape unveil (pun intended), I
have been very aware of capes on the runway, red carpets and street style and am
giddy over the idea that capes are here to stay. They are appropriate for the
office, weddings and weekend date nights. I will highlight the casual cape in an
upcoming blog post – please find examples of the formal look below.
